Why are you a physicist?
In 80s, when I was a child, the Iranian television used to show plenty of TV series on the biography of scientists. These TV shows inspired me to become a scientist. In high school, I excelled in math, especially in geometry which was my favorite subject. However, physics both fascinated and scared me. It seemed intriguing that nature should be governed by laws. It seemed even more non-trivial that these laws are described in terms of mathematics such that our minds can discover and comprehend. It would be thrilling to play a role in discovering the laws of nature as a physicist. In the last year of high school, I was chosen as a member of national Olympiad team and through the guidance of my teachers, I chose to become a physicist. That was a decision that I never regret. In fact, I consider it as one of the best decisions of my life.
At the time, my parents were very concerned that as a physicist, I will not be able to financially handle my life. Indeed, becoming a high energy physicist is not the best way to become rich. However, with proper financial planning, one can manage and be rather well-off. Being a physicist helps you to think out of the box and find solutions for various problems of your life including the financial ones.
One of the attractive aspects of being physicist is belonging to the international physics community that eventually becomes your very prestigious second family.
